Wielkopolska – A European Region

We wish to invite you to Wielkopolskie Province which owing to its history, traditions and culture is commonly referred to as Wielkopolska.

It was here at the turn of the X and XI centuries, that the foundations of the Polish nation were formed, of which the largest settlements were in the present day cities of Gniezno and Poznań.

Lying in the west of Poland and comprising an area of 30,000 square kilometres, it is the second largest of the country’s 16 provinces, with some 3.4 million inhabitants.

The administration of Wielkopolska is divided into 35 administrative districts and 226 municipalities. Of the 109 towns and cities the largest is Poznań (570 thousand inhabitants) - the capital, and industrial, educational and cultural centre of the region. Other large towns include Kalisz (109 thousand inhabitants), Konin (81 thousand inhabitants), Piła (81 thousand inhabitants), Ostrów Wielkopolski (73 thousand inhabitants), Gniezno (70 thousand inhabitants), and Leszno (64 thousand inhabitants).
