In geographical terms Wielkopolska is a bridge between the West and East of Europe. The A2 motorway, built by the Province, runs along the axis of these two continental parts with a railway line adapted for the European system of high speed trains running alongside. This forms the means of transport linking Wielkopolska with other nations in the European Union and with central Poland and further into Eastern Europe. The line runs through the regional capital, Poznań, which is 300km away from Warsaw and 260km from Berlin.
136km of motorway is already operational between Konin and Nowy Tomyśl and a further 106km is due to be completed by the end of 2007 in the direction of the German border. Under the terms of the concession contract signed in 1999, the final length of the motorway between Konin and Świecko should be 255km.
There are 14 interchanges scheduled to be built along the route running through Wielkopolska, linking the national road network and provinces to the motorway. The terrain lying alongside the interchange is regarded as particularly attractive to investors as a result of its exceptionally easy access to transport links.
Approximately 5 thousand hectares of land has been earmarked for investment next to each interchange. This land could be made available both to small investors as well as strategic investment requiring large-scale tracts of land.
‘Ławica’ airport also fulfils an important transport function ensuring connections both internally with Warsaw and internationally with Copenhagen, Munich, Zurich, Frankfurt, Braunschweig, Cologne, Stuttgart, Dortmund, London, Dublin, and seasonally with Majorca and Crete. The expansion of the airport and the subsequent air transport development is one of the main development priorities for the province. In order to increase the capacity for international passenger and cargo flights a new passenger terminal has already been built and plans have been made to further expand the airport’s infrastructure.
