In comparison with other parts of the country, Wielkopolska is perceived as a region with a high level of socio-economic development. During the years of structural and political change in Poland this area developed faster and achieved higher economic indicators than the national average.
Vital factors for the growth of Wielkopolska are its well developed manufacturing and service sectors.Industry here is structurally balanced and is in many fields in the leading position nationally (these include the agricultural and food industry, production of motor vehicles and furniture). Wielkopolska is marked by smooth development in different areas, a notable degree of industrialisation, a high level of technological advancement, and an openness to foreign markets. Within the country itself, it is widely regarded as a strong region.
The Wielkopolskie Province is characterised by the significant involvement of foreign investors. Up to date, over 4.5 thousand firms have been established thanks to the availability of foreign capital. In terms of trade structure, sectors preferred by foreign investors are foodstuffs, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, transport, and machinery and technical equipment. There is also a large scale involvement in the financial sector and the rapidly expanding trade sector. Most of the foreign investments have been made by German companies, although there is also considerable British, American, Irish, and Swedish investment capital. The value of investments by foreign firms amounts to approximately 7 billion USD.
Economic co-operation, particularly internationally, is given a major boost by trade fairs and commodity markets. Of special significance is Poznań International Fair (PIF), a trade fair organiser with an eighty-year history, thanks to which Poznań is able to maintain its position as the business capital of Poland. Annually, PIF organises 40 specialised trade events, often regarded to be of the top European level, which represent over 140 different economic branches.
