Poznań’s colleges rate amongst the best in Poland in the higher education rankings. Amongst these, are many state run universities like Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań University of Technology, University of Medical Sciences, Poznań Academy of Fine Arts, University of Agriculture, University of Economics and Poznań Academy of Physical Education. In addition, there are numerous private schools and colleges such as Poznań School of Banking or Poznań School of Logistics. Some 168,446 students were in higher education during 2004 and 2005, of which some 28,199 received grants. This treasure trove of young talent (34,442 graduates in the academic year of 2004-2005), their ability and willingness to take on new challenges is often cited as a major motivation for foreign businesses to invest here. It is worth mentioning that educational opportunities are not restricted to Poznań: young people in Wielkopolska can take advantage of state run higher colleges of vocational studies found in the majority of the region’s larger towns, for example Kalisz, Konin, Gniezno, Leszno, or Piła, and there are also many private schools all over the province’s territory. Wielkopolska also has a Regional Strategy for Innovation. Its objective is to build an innovation strategy for the region using the RIS/RITTS methodology, which has already proved successful in other European Union countries. It is based on grass-roots co-operation between different players of the innovation system: enterprises, universities, research institutes, providers of financial and advisory services, local government authorities and other public institutions. The process of the strategy development utilises expert analyses concerning the demand for innovations on the part of the economy and implementation of tools facilitating adjustment of the supply which comes from scientific and auxiliary institutions to that demand.
