The province places a huge amount of emphasis on the development of international cooperation, and the towns and municipalities here have much to offer to their international partners. Contacts have been developed and reciprocal trade agreements have been signed with nearly 300 independent European firms, and interest in fostering further co-operation remains high.
The local government of Wielkopolska has signed official co-operation agreements with the following regions: Brittany in France, Lower Saxony, Hessen, and Brandenburg in Germany, Northern Brabant in Holland, Hainaut Province in Belgium, Nottinghamshire in Great Britain, the district of Kharkov in the Ukraine as well as southern parts of Kazakstan and the counties of Västermorrland, and Västerbotten in Sweden.
Wielkopolska also co-operated with Marche in Italy (on the basis of a letter of intent), with the Italian region of Emilia Romagne, Samara in Russia, Catalonia in Spain, Berlin and French Aquitaine. The main aims of this co-operation include trade relations, stimulating local markets, restructuring of rural areas, development of the transport infrastructure, protection of the environment and water management, science and education, culture, sport and tourism and youth exchanges.
With particular regard to the institutions of the European Union, an important role in international co-operation is fulfilled by the Wielkopolska Information Office in Brussels. Amongst other things, it represents the region’s interest and presents its requests to European institutions, helps companies from Wielkopolska gain access to European Union funding, and supports the actions of regional representatives within European institutions. It also co-operates with the twin regions and other regions of the EU which have their representative offices in Brussels within the co-operation network and works towards building this network further.
The project „Regions of Poland” was realized in cooperation with the Offices of the Presidents of the 16 regions of Poland.
