Wielkopolska is also the most important agricultural region of Poland with vast amounts of land. Despite the fact that the natural conditions (soil, climate) are by no means better than average for the country as a whole, and indeed in some areas they are even worse, for the most part, the levels of efficiency, technical equipment and farming practices, measure up favourably with European standards. The advanced degree of organic food production and the high yields of crops and the optimal size of livestock headage put the region at the head of all the provinces.
The preferred type of agriculture in Wielkopolska is cereal crop farming and cattle and pig breeding, and there is a present development trend towards expanding areas of intensive cultivation. On a national scale, the region dominates in the production of sugar beet as well as other vegetable crops. The region is also well known for producing asparagus, button mushrooms and organic foodstuffs (there are currently 69 organic farms in operation, 33 of which have full certification). The wholesale of agricultural produce is run by The Wielkopolska Agricultural Guild, which is located in Poznań and well-placed to co-operate with foreign markets.
