The coast of the Baltic Sea at the estuary of the Vistula, which flows into the Baltic Sea near Gdansk, is rich in precious amber. A treasure of this land, it has been in demand since the times of ancient Greece, for jewellery and its therapeutic qualities. Even now amber, part of Pomorskie’s history, is treated as a real treasure. You can find products made of Pomorskie amber all over the world. They are manufactured by Pomorskie’s artists and craftsmen, who have mastered the art of amber working.
Pomorskie is not only the capital of the amber craft. At the Archaeological Museum in Gdansk you can visit the exhibition ‘With Amber for Millennia’, with exhibits from the 16th and 17th centuries. At the Museum of Inclusion at the University of Gdansk you can see pieces of amber with beetles, flies and termites in them. Since June 2006 the Museum of Amber has been established as a department of the History Museum of the City of Gdansk.
Mariacka Street, mentioned earlier, is the real ‘Amber Street’, with numerous amber shops and galleries on both sides.
Gdansk plays host to the annual Amber, Jewellery and Stone Fair ‘Amberif’, with exhibitors from Poland and all over the world.
Another great attraction of Pomorskie is the Amber Altar at St Brigide Church, under construction now. To complete the altar it will need six and a half tonnes of amber!
There are many other reasons for visiting Pomorskie – come and discover it for yourself! The project „Regions of Poland” was realized in cooperation with the Offices of the Presidents of the 16 regions of Poland.
