Podlaskie Voivodship is located in the north-eastern part of Poland. It borders on three other voivodships: Warminsko-Mazurskie, Mazowieckie and a short stretch of Lubelskie. To the north-east it borders on Lithuania (borderline of about 100 km) and to the east with Belarus (about 250 km). Podlaskie Voivodship is the internal (with Lithuania) and external (with Belarus) border of the European Union. The capital of the region is the City of Białystok, located about 180 km away from country’s capital – Warsaw.
Podlaskie Voivodship covers an area of 20 180 km2, i.e. 6.5% of country’s total area, and is the 6th largest voivodship in Poland. It is divided into 14 powiats (counties), including 3 cities with powiat status and 118 gminas (districts).
The capital of the region - Białystok – is inhabited by nearly 300.000 people. The city developed in the first half of the 18th c. when Grand Hetman of the Crown - Jan Klemens Branicki was its governor. Today Białystok is the largest industrial, cultural and scientific center of the region.
