History

Here, where Czerwień and other towns stood.

About the importance of the grounds of today's Lubelskie and trade routes from Małopolska, Silesia and Western Europe to Kievan Rus, the history of Towns Czerwieńskie testifies best. This border defensive system, built from 7th to 10th century by Lendians, Wolynians and other tribes was a basis of Polish statehood in early middle age in the East. Today remnants of towns we will find in numerous localities of region, most well-known are: Gródek by the Bug river (former Wołyń) and Czermno near Tyszowce (former Czerwień). The cities of Chełm, Horodło, Hrubieszów and many other are former historical towns.

From Union of Lublin to European Union.

Lublin, capital and oldest city of region (town privileges from 1317 year), was on 1 July of 1569 year a place of unprecedented event in history of the continent – signing of international arrangement between Poland and Lithuania. This event was reminded by the pope John Paul II, just before accession to EU of both states, saying about continuation of union's spirit “From Lublin Union to European Union”. In May of 2004 Lublin stressed entry of Poland to UE organizing of European Congress of Rectors of Higher Schools, with participation of a few hundred scholars from West and East of the continent.

Golden period of Renaissance

Lubelskie Region owes Jagiello dynasty a large civilization jump, including the establishment – in 1474 by king Kazimierz Jagiellończyk of Lubelskie Region (voivodeship). Lublin, as royal city often hosted rulers and kings traveling from Cracow to Vilnius. It was a place of a province noble assemblies, but also General Assemblies – with most memorable in 1569, on which Union was signed between Poland and Lithuania.

Chapel of Holy Trinity in the castle of Lublin is perfect example of multicultural aspect of cities and region from that period. It is a relic of highest world class, in which Russian –Byzantine paintings (from 1418) cover the whole interior of Gothic church from 14th century - a typical example of western culture. The top of front elevation has been later decorated in so-called Lubelskie Renaissance style.

Local architects and builders have developed own individual style in architecture. They joined Gothic proportions of churches with original decoration inspired by Italian Renaissance's and Flemish art. It makes Lubelskie a very specific and important point on the map of that time.
